Programme Aims

The aim of the Nautical Science programme is the proper training of Deck Officers, in order for them to acquire key positions on merchant marine ships. The training provided is in accordance with the standards of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and it is in full compliance with the provisions set out by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Advisory Committee

The Board of Governors (BoG) consists of 15 Shipping Companies and acts as an Advisory Committee towards the BSc in Nautical Science program. The purpose of the Board is to provide a direct link to the needs of the industry, advice the programme on all industry related developments, provide support to the aims and tasks of the programme and monitor and evaluate the progress of the qualifications.

  • Provide unbiased advice on issues raised by the Management and faculty of the program

  • Evaluate and assist in the development of new programs, both Academic & short courses

REQUIREMENTS & REGULATIONS

The minimum admission requirement to an undergraduate programme of study is a recognized High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or equivalent internationally recognized qualification(s). Students with a lower HSLC grade than 7.5/10 or 15/20 or equivalent depending on the grading system of the country issuing the HSLC, can be approved under certain conditions. In addition, all applicants must have at least 75% in Mathematics; otherwise, they will be required to successfully pass a placement test in Mathematics.

Furthermore, applicants who meet the admission criteria must successfully complete an interview (either in person or online), which will be conducted by the Academic Staff of the Study Program. Successful candidates will receive a conditional acceptance, subject to the fulfillment of the requirements described below.

Applicants who fulfill all of the Entry Requirements and successfully completed the interview, will receive a Conditional Acceptance Letter. In order for the applicants to receive an Unconditionally Acceptance Letter and officially register to the BSc in Nautical Science, they must submit to the Admissions Office the following mandatory documents:

  • Medical Fitness Certificate for Service at Sea (based on the Regulation STCW I/9) from a doctor/medical center/hospital approved by the relevant competent authority of your country of origin (Upon arrival to Cyprus you must re-issue the Medical Fitness Certificate for Service at Sea from a doctor/medical center/ hospital approved by the Department of Merchant Shipping in Cyprus
  • Valid Clear Criminal Record Certificate

Course assessment usually comprises of a comprehensive final exam and continuous assessment. Continuous assessment can include amongst others, mid-terms, projects (class participation).

Letter grades are calculated based on the weight of the final exam and the continuous assessment and the actual numerical marks obtained in these two assessment components. Based on the course grades the student’s semester grade point average (GPA) and cumulative point average (CPA) are calculated.

The student must complete 240 ECTS and all programme requirements.

A minimum cumulative grade point average (CPA) of 2.0 is required. Thus, although a ‘D- ‘ is a PASS grade, in order to achieve a CPA of 2.0 an average grade of ‘C’ is required.

Scholarships

CADET SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (CSP)

ACADEMIC YEAR 2026 – 2027

The Cadet Scholarship Program (CSP) is granted to newly enrolled Cadets of CyMA in collaboration with shipping companies and other affiliated companies operating in the maritime sector.

The Companies participate individually and commit themselves along with CyMA to a fixed scholarship amount for a minimum duration of 4 years (the official study period at CyMA)

All scholarships to be granted will be conditional and will be reviewed and renewed annually, based on the individual Cadet’s performance during the previous year.

Scholarships available under the Program will be granted to newly enrolled Cadets of CyMA according to the following conditions:

Scholarships of €7,200/Year to cover the Annual Tuition of CyMA and to be granted individually, by the end of the first year of studies, to newly enrolled Cadets from Cyprus who fulfil specific socio-economic and academic criteria:

  • Successful fulfillment of all entrance criteria for enrolling in CyMA (i.e. Highschool Leaving Certificate grade, knowledge of English, personal interview etc.).
  • Combined Annual Family Income limited to €60,000/Annum.
  • Proof of any other socio-economic factors meriting the awarding scholarship
  • Achievement of a minimum CPA of 2.50/4.00 during the first semester of studies.
  • Successful interview with the participating Shipping Companies.

Scholarships under the CSP are granted subject to mutual agreement between the participating Shipping Companies and the student-cadets.

All scholarships to be granted will be conditional and will be reviewed and renewed annually, based on the individual Cadet’s performance during the previous year.

The evaluation of each cadet will be performed by CyMA and the corresponding company and will be based on:

  • Academic Performance: Cadets must successfully complete all courses with a minimum average CPA of 2.50/4.00 for the academic year when the scholarship is granted under the CSP
  • Practical Performance: Cadets are acquired to achieve a positive feedback during all practical trainings and onboard periods of sea-service

If a Cadet fails to meet the above requirements in a given academic year, then they may be liable to forego their eligibility to receive the scholarship awarded under the CSP in the following academic year.

Scholarships will be paid by Companies directly to the Academy in the form of a Tuition Fee payment in the name and to the benefit of the individual Cadets selected under the CSP.

The scholarship funds will be distributed equally over the 4 years of study, subject to the successful annual review of the Cadet’s academic and practical performance, and the continued participation of individual Companies in the CSP.

The Cadets benefitting from the CSP will be expected to complete their 12-month practical training primarily onboard vessels of the specific shipping company providing their scholarship (unless agreed otherwise), thereby leading to their potential employment upon graduation.

  1. Prospective cadets must initially apply for admission to the «BSc in Nautical Science» program of study. Prospective cadets can apply either online via CyMA’s official website or through direct contact with the admissions office.
  2. Upon their official registration to the programme, all Cadets must complete the Cadet Scholarship Application Form and submit it to the Admissions Office. Scholarship Application Forms must be submitted by the end of October of each Academic Year.
  3. During the second semester, student-cadets will attend the “Adopt a Cadet” event, where they will have the opportunity to be interviewed by the participating Shipping Companies in order to secure their onboard practical training.
  4. Prior to the interviews, the participating Shipping Companies will be provided with the academic record of the student-cadets from the previous (Fall) semester.
  5. Upon completion of the interviews, the Companies will select their preferred student-cadets to offer them the cadetship, as well as, where applicable, a scholarship. At this stage, the Scholarship Application Form will be provided to the participating Shipping Companies.
  6. A separate meeting will be held between the Companies and the selected student-cadets to finalize their mutual agreement for the cadetship.
  7. If the selected student-cadets also meet the eligibility criteria for the scholarship set out in the “Eligibility and selection” section above, the Companies may also offer them the scholarship.
