Programme Aims

The aim of the Nautical Science programme is the proper training of Deck Officers, in order for them to acquire key positions on merchant marine ships. The training provided is in accordance with the standards of the United Nations International Maritime Organization (IMO) and it is in full compliance with the provisions set out by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW).

Theoretical Knowledge and Practical Skills

In-depth understanding of nautical science processes and technologies, proficiency in mathematics, physics, and navigation techniques for marine problem-solving, training on marine engines and nautical electronic instruments, knowledge of technical maritime English terminology, familiarity with COLREGS code, ECDIS & GMDSS systems, ARPA, ISPS-SSO, RADAR, BMS & BTM-BRM simulation.

Management, Leadership, and Communication

Human resource management, leadership, and administration expertise, understanding of marine legal issues and maritime law, crisis management, risk assessment, and onboard safety, effective oral and written communication skills, experience with ship-to-shore communication and collaboration with headquarters personnel.

Navigation, Operations, and Ship Handling

In-depth knowledge of deck seamanship, navigation, marine meteorology, cargo transport, and chartering-insurance, proficiency in using various simulators (Bridge simulator, GMDSS & communications simulator, Cargo handling simulator), broad understanding of MARPOL and Ballast Water Management, experience in navigation, maneuvering, and safe ship handling, knowledge of vessel elements, structural parts, and mechanical and naval architectural design principles, appreciation for the importance and benefits of lifelong learning in the nautical science profession.

Advisory Committee

The Board of Governors (BoG) consists of 15 Shipping Companies and acts as an Advisory Committee towards the BSc in Nautical Science program. The purpose of the Board is to provide a direct link to the needs of the industry, advice the programme on all industry related developments, provide support to the aims and tasks of the programme and monitor and evaluate the progress of the qualifications.
