BSc Marine Engineering

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Marine Engineering program

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Marine Engineering program at Intercollege Larnaca and in collaboration with the Cyprus Maritime Academy of the University of Nicosia, aims in training individuals towards becoming Engineering Officers on commercial ships, based on the standards of the STCW International Convention (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers).

Upon completion of the 4 years of study, which also includes one year training on board, the graduates will obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering by Intercollege Larnaca and also the Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch Certificate of Competency, at an operational level by the University of Nicosia.


The Bachelor of Science will offer students the necessary academic, managerial and scientific knowledge of the field, whereas the Certificate of Competency will give them the opportunity to be promoted to the positions of Second Engineer and Chief Engineer. Graduates will also be able to work in executive positions for shipping companies.

Engine Officers, under the orders of the Chief Engineer, are responsible for the proper running, maintenance and repair of the mechanical and electrical installations of the ship. The perfect candidates for a position like this are skillful and knowledgeable individuals who seek professional development opportunities and keep up-to-date with new technological advancements.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the management of the Engine Room, as well as the operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical installations of the ship.



General Objectives

  1. Prepare students to become successful professional engineers in the demanding field of Marine engineering;
  2. Provide graduates the necessary knowledge and technical skills to excel in the marine engineering industry as officers in charge of an engineering watch and then promote into Second Engineer & Chief Engineer;
  3. Provide students with the fundamental principles of science and engineering in order to cope successfully with the technological challenges of the marine engineering industry;
  4. Cultivate analytical skills, problem solving tactics, and critical thinking;
  5. Promote engineering ethics, job responsibility, and moral practices;
  6. Carry out safely the watch keeping duties of an officer in charge of an engineering watch, both at sea and in port;
  7. Create awareness of social, environmental, and global concerns;
  8. Promote life-long learning and continuous education through technical training and advanced degrees;
  9. Cover the minimum International Maritime Organization (IMO) standard of competence for officer in charge of an engineering watch (STCW 2010 Convention Chapter III, Section AIII/1. IMO model course 7.04 Functions 1, 2, 3 & 4);
  10. Develop skills for effective communication with co-workers, Chief Engineers, and the public on topics related to technical concepts, risks, and recommendations.


Specific Objectives

  1. Equip students with fundamental knowledge, analytical skills, engineering tools, simulator and laboratory experience in order to cope successfully in the technologically challenging field of marine engineering;
  2. Facilitate learning and training in the field of marine engineering which are directly linked to industry and current state-of-the-art technology;
  3. Provide the theoretical and computational skills necessary for the solution of both theoretical and practical engineering problems in the field of marine engineering;
  4. Provide practical and experimental hands-on and one year on-board experience that allows the students to link directly to fundamental knowledge and theory;
  5. Prepare students to work alone or in groups in order to provide engineering solutions;
  6. Prepare students to design/implement systems and processes towards the solution of marine engineering problems;
  7. Develop communications skills including the abilities to write technical reports;
  8. Provide students the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and technical competence in their field of expertise in order to become successful professional marine engineers;
  9. Obtain certain knowledge related to: Marine Engineering; Electrical, Electronic and Control Engineering; Maintenance and Repair; Controlling the Operation of the Ship and Care of Persons on Board, all at the Operational level based on the IMO STCW (Standards of Trainings, Certifications and Watchkeeping AIII/1) competency.


  • Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, the students are expected to:

  1. Have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the processes and technologies involved in the field of marine engineering;
  2. Use mathematics, basic science, and engineering techniques to analyze and solve problems related to marine engineering;
  3. Do mechanical workshops for specialized marine engineering functions;
  4. Have a broad knowledge in maritime law, in order to understand the impact of the law in the area of marine engineering;
  5. Be responsible for the proper running, maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical installations of the ship;
  6. Learn definitions and specialized terminology of maritime English;
  7. Use marine engineering knowledge and tools to design a structure, a device, or process that meets specific needs within constraints of social, economic, environmental, ethical, sustainability, and safety origin;
  8. Have in-depth knowledge of engineering concepts and technical requirements and constraints associated with marine engineering design;
  9. Use available measurement data and computer software to reconstruct components of various structures under testing and evaluation;
  10. Learn to use the Engine Room Simulator and familiarize with the concepts of refrigeration, piping systems, marine boiler, marine main machinery systems and ERM;
  11. Have broad knowledge of ship types, architecture and construction;
  12. Communicate effectively with others using oral or written skills;

Know the importance and benefits of life-long learning in the engineering profession.

Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

The admission criteria for entry to the BSc Marine Engineering program is a High School Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification with an average grade of ‘15 out of 20′ (75%) or its equivalent. If the HSCL is lower than 15, a concentration in Mathematics and/or Physics with an average of 15/20 is necessary.

In addition to a strong academic record, we take into account the student’s involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and other relevant background information especially relevant to sea experience.

Knowledge of the English Language
Students should present at least a TOEFL score of 500 paper-based or 173 computer-based, or TOEFL IBT with a score of at least 61, or IGCSE/GCSE “O” Level with “C”, or IELTS with a score of 6.0 and above, or Cambridge Exams (First Certificate with Grade B and above, as well as Proficiency with Grade C and above), or score placement at the ENGL-100 level of the University of Nicosia Placement Test.


  • Medical Fitness Certificate for seafarers (based on the Regulation STCW I/9) from a doctor/medical center/ hospital approved by the Department of Merchant Shipping in Cyprus, or the relevant authority in your country of origin.
