Conditions of Use

Section 1:  Access Requirements

Off-campus can be defined as an office, dormitory room, home or any other remote location outside the university premises.

Due to licensing restrictions required by publishers who produce electronic resources, off-campus access to the e-resources
is limited to only authorized users.

To have access to the Library’s e-resources from off-campus, users must:
Be currently enrolled/employed as students, faculty, researchers or staff of the university.

Possess an active UNIC User / Library card. Visit the Circulation Desk every semester to activate your borrowing
rights as an active Unic Library member. Only then can you use the proxy server.

- Students are automatically given a Student card when they first register at the University of Nicosia.
If you do not have a valid Student card, please contact the Finance Office.

- Faculty, researchers, or staff members of the University, must get a Library card from the Circulation Desk.
A sticker with a barcode number will be placed on your card. This number will serve as your Username when connecting to the proxy server.

Once you are an active member of the library, there is a 24 hour waiting period after which you can access the e-resources from off campus. You can then proceed to use the proxy service.
Follow instructions on Section 4 on how to connect to the Proxy server.

Section 2: Proxy Service and Password Access

To obtain access via the World Wide Web to the library resources from off campus, it is necessary to use the following proxy server with your web browser.

Proxy Host: proxy.intercol.edu or proxy.unic.ac.cy
Proxy Port: 8080

Details on how to set various  Web Browsers to do this are given in Section 4.
Below, see also Section 3: Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that when you attempt to use the proxy server from off campus, the proxy server responds with a login window.
Log in with your Username and Password. Enter your ID number or barcode in the Username field and your date of birth in the Password field as follows:

Example:
Username: L00000100 Password: 19901210 (password must be entered in the format yyyymmdd)

[yyyy represents the year, i.e. 1990
mm represents the month, i.e. 12 (December)
dd represents the day of the month, i.e. 10th day of the month]

Finally, once you enter into the Proxy server, you click on Databases & articles.  Note:  A new page opens with a list of all databases available.  Click on the database of your choice and begin searching.

Section 3:  Frequently Asked Questions

1.  Does the proxy work with all the browsers available?
The proxy server is browser independent, that is, any browser should work with the University’s proxy solution. However,
if you have problems that are not related to login information, please try a different Browser. It is advisable to have two browsers installed at any time on your computer. One browser should always be configured to use the proxy service.
In doing so, you can avoid configuring and un-configuring your browser all the time.

2.  Have cookies and Javascript enabled in your browser and any pop-up blocker software disabled.
These settings are located under Edit-> Preferences in Netscape, Tools-> Internet Options in Internet Explorer,
Tools-> Options in Firefox, Tools-> Preferences in Opera

3.  What might be the problem if you are not able to have access from off campus?
-You may need to de-activate/shut down any firewall and/or antivirus software on the computer you are trying to access
the proxy server from.

- Some companies or Internet Providers may be using a proxy server to restrict Internet access. Because of this you may
be unable to configure your Web browser to use the Remote Authentication Proxy Server simultaneously. In this case you
will not be able to utilize this service.

- You may also have problems accessing particular resources due to the port numbers used by specific Web servers.
If your LAN does not allow Web traffic on any ports except port 80 (the standard http port), you will have problems.

For proxy-related questions or problems, please email Libithelp@unic.ac.cy and make sure you give us the Username and Password that you tried to use and had problems with.

Conditions of use for the University of Nicosia Library Electronic Resources
(Revised March 18, 2008)
Please be aware of the following conditions when using the University of Nicosia Library’s electronic resources. Your understanding of and compliance with these conditions is essential to ensuring the legal and ethical use of these resources.

Due to licensing restrictions required by the publishers who produce electronic resources, access to the resources that the UNIC Library subscribes to is limited to authorized users only.

Authorized users may use the Library’s electronic resources solely for scholarly, research, or educational purposes.

The Library is required by electronic resource publishers to restrict access to authorized users by verifying usernames and identification numbers, through use of passwords, or by restricting access to IP (internet protocol) addresses on the UNIC campus. For this reason, you will be asked to enter your University of Nicosia username and password when you attempt to connect to the electronic resource.

Giving unauthorized users access to computers, usernames, identification numbers, or passwords is a violation of the publisher-library agreement and may result in disciplinary or legal action.

It is prohibited to make print or electronic copies of materials accessed via electronic resources for redistribution to non-subscribers or non-subscribing institutions.

The downloading of entire journal issues or complete journal volumes in a systematic fashion is strictly prohibited.

Furthermore, attempts to download the entire database are also prohibited by the license agreement between the publishers of these resources and the University, and copyright law.

The University of Nicosia reserves the right to terminate computing services of users who repeatedly infringe upon the rights of copyright owners.

If you have questions about or need further information with these restrictions and conditions of use, please contact the Library by email (Libithelp@unic.ac.cy) or by telephone, 22-444772.
